NEOGA TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL SCARLET AND GRAY LETTER FOR ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENT

UPPER PHOTO: Many of the graduates of the Etna School enjoyed successful careers. Among them is my friend and advisor Robert Benefiel now retired from meritorious service as teacher, coach and administrator in the Illinois public school system. As he graduated from NTHS in 1946, Robert was awarded this letter for assuring that the Neoga Indians completed another successful basketball season. The two gray bars signify that this is the second scarlet and gray letter he earned.
LOWER PHOTO: And here is the real Robert Benefiel in his sweater with the well earned NTHS letter.
FROM SON TOM BENEFIEL:
"The owner of the NTHS 1945-46 basketball letter. My mother used to wear this sweater around the house when she was chilly. It hung in our downstairs bathroom's closet on a nail until about 1985. At that time, Mom removed the letter and burned the worn out sweater. (She'd patched the elbows and had kept it alive for over 40 years the best she could.)"
